LEARNING TO READ, WORLD VISION NEPAL

Learning to read is a privilege.  Most children across the developing world don't have the chance to read because classrooms are empty of materials and teachers haven't been equipped with the training and resources they need.    In hilly and mountainous villages of Nepal, less than 40% of children are able to read with comprehension by the time they reach 11. Classrooms are dark and damp, musky and empty of any materials. Teachers are doing their best, but helping children to gain literacy is a mission impossible under these conditions.  See the first 4 photos of this series to get an idea of the darkness of classroom, the dampness created by mud on the walls, and the total void of any materials that might encourage kids to turn up to class each day.

Fastforward to the 5th photo and you'll see the explosion of colour that comes from World Vision's Unlock Literacy program in Nepal. Training teachers and helping them to equip the classroom with locally available materials, like shells and stones for counting, transform the learning environment and turns it into a fun space. The difference it's made: a 50% increase in the number of children who can read by age 11. Pretty impressive.
